Miguel Ángel Margáin, widely known as “Mike Margáin,” holds an LL.B. with honors (mención honorífica) from Universidad Panamericana and an LL.M. (Master of Laws) from the University of Cambridge, UK, where he was a British Council scholar.
With over 30 years of experience in Intellectual Property (IP), he has established a distinguished career across the private, public, and academic sectors. In private practice, he has been a partner at leading specialized firms, spearheading complex administrative litigation before regulatory authorities and courts, including the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).
In the public sector, he was appointed in 2013 by the President of Mexico as Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), serving until 2018. In this role, he led pivotal reforms to the Industrial Property Law and represented Mexico in the negotiation of major international trade agreements, including the USMCA (T-MEC), CPTPP, and the modernization of the FTA EU-MX (TLCUEM).
He chaired the APEC Intellectual Property Rights Experts Group (IPEG) from 2013 to 2018 and the WIPO Madrid Union Assembly from 2015 to 2017. Additionally, he served as President of AMPPI (2008–2010) and remains an active member of INTA, ECTA, ASIPI, and AmCham Mexico.
In academia, he is an IP professor at Universidad Panamericana, ITAM, Universidad Anáhuac (Campeche, Cancún, and Mérida campuses), ITESM, and El Colegio de México.
Recognized as one of the leading IP litigators in Latin America, his current practice focuses on innovation protection, administrative litigation, and IP public policy.
