The decision denied the defendant&#8217;s motion to partially dismiss the case, allowing the publishers to move forward with their claims for secondary liability and violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The dispute originated in 2023, when the publishers sued Anthropic for allegedly using, without authorization, lyrics from more than 500 songs- including works by artists such as Beyonc\u00e9, The Rolling Stones, and The Beach Boys-to train its Claude language model. They further alleged that the company allowed users of its chatbot to reproduce copyrighted. lyrics, constituting contributory and vicarious infringement. Anthropic sought dismissal of those claims, asserting that it lacked knowledge of the infringing acts and did not derive direct financial benefit from them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In her ruling, Judge Lee found that the plaintiffs had plausibly alleged that Anthropic had actual knowledge of infringing acts committed by Claude&#8217;s users, given that the company had implemented monitoring mechanisms, or guardrails, capable of detecting and recording user prompts involving copyrighted material. The court also deemed it plausible that Anthropic derived economic benefit from users&#8217; access to and use of its chatbot, insofar as it enabled the generation of unlicensed song lyrics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The ruling also upheld the claim regarding the intentional removal of copyright management information (CMI) in violation of the DMCA. The publishers contend that Anthropic deliberately stripped metadata identifying ownership of musical works from the datasets used to train its Al, with the intent to conceal the unauthorized use of that material. Judge Lee found that the plaintiffs had plausibly alleged both the requisite knowledge and intent (scienter) to sustain this claim.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This litigation forms part of a broader series of landmark cases that will define the boundaries of fair use in the development of artificial intelligence systems. The decision in Concord Music Group Inc. v.
