Despite the international economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, trademark registration boomed in 2020, due to the creation of new products as well as the need to solve new social needs through services that are indispensable.
This is reflected in the World Intellectual Property Indicators Report (WIPI) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which lists the activity of filing applications for patents and industrial designs.
Statistics from some local and international authorities (150) reported a growth of 13.7% in the filing of trademark registration applications, 1.6% in patents, 1.6%, and with respect to designs, it increased by 2%. These data confirm that there is increasing confidence in the benefits of intellectual property to obtain a better business strategy.
General Director from WIPO, Daren Tang, explained that the report shows “a strong indicator of innovation and remarkable resilience during the pandemic”, as opposed to the financial decline of 2008-2009, when application submission activity of patents and trademark registration decreased sharply.
In this context, Tang said that “companies around the world have introduced new products and services to the market, which is reflected in the double-digit growth of trademark filing activity in 2020.”
And is that in the face of the difficult situation that is experienced worldwide, companies are finding opportunities to reach customers in new ways, open new markets and take their ideas to the world using intellectual property.
