According to the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Patent Landscape Report, between 2014 and 2023, more than 38,000 generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) patents came out of China, six times more than those filed by inventors in the United States, the second-ranked country in the submitted report.

This puts the Asian giant at a significant advantage in generative artificial intelligence (AI), which is responsible for creating content such as text, images, code, and music from existing information. It should be noted that in recent years, this technology has experienced an explosive increase in social interest.

In this context, WIPO has registered more than 50,000 patent applications in the last decade; of which only 25% have been filed in 2023. Christopher Harrison, Director of Patent Analysis at WIPO, highlighted the rapid growth of this sector and foresees an even greater expansion in the future.

This progress has been achieved even though many major international providers of generative AI services, such as OpenAI, have faced restrictions in China; key patent applicants include Byte Dance, owner of the popular video app TikTok, e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, and Microsoft, which backs startup OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT. Against this backdrop, enterprise adoption of generative AI in China is expected to accelerate further, as a price war is likely to drive down the cost of large language modeling services for businesses…

The report also notes that China is a world leader in continuous automated monitoring (CAM), which it describes as a controversial but widespread use case for generative AI tools.

According to Udo Sglavo, vice president of Applied Artificial Intelligence and Modeling, this technology can collect and analyze substantial amounts of data on user activities, behavior, and communications, which can lead to privacy breaches as users are unaware of the scope of the data collected and how it’s used.

On the other hand, WIPO said “it expects a new wave of patents to be filed soon and plan
