In a milestone for the technology industry, last Monday, a U.S. Federal Circuit appeals court, dismissed a landmark $2.18 billion patent infringement ruling issued in 2021 against Intel Corporation, marking a major reversal of one of the largest verdicts in the history of U.S. patent law.
It should be recalled that the legal dispute between the two companies involved multiple lawsuits in several U.S. courts, as VLSI accused Intel of infringing several patents related to semiconductor technology. In turn, Intel argued that it had not reproduce said techniques and that it had created more sophisticated mechanisms to solve the two problems protected by those patents.
However, the Federal Circuit’s recent decision holds that the evidence of Intel’s infringement, which already amounted to $675 million, was insufficient to demonstrate the infringement of the two patents. As a result, the appeals court reversed the 2021 jury verdict, which found that Intel infringed just one VLSI patent.
As a result, it was determined that the findings were sufficient to initiate a new trial in Texas to determine damages. Currently, Intel has expressed satisfaction with the ruling. The firm also revealed plans to argue at the upcoming trial that the VLSI patent has minimal value.
Meanwhile, VLSI representatives have not commented on the current court decision.
