Despite the success of the 2022 film The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, the film has faced several controversies and even a legal dispute arising from accusations of plagiarism.
Christopher Wozniak, a DC comic book writer and an independent artist during the 1990s, accused the film of plagiarize the story he wrote. The writer cited several specific moments in the film, which corroborated his argument, such as the fact that Riddler (Paul Dano) is an assassin angry about Gotham’s corruption, and also pointed out that in one scene Bruce Wayne receives a phone call saying that Alfred has been the victim of an attack, just as it happened in his script.
According to the complainant, he tried to sell the script to Warner Bros but had no success. He then allegedly gave the script to film producer Michael Uslan. When he saw the first trailer for The Batman, he noticed the similarities to his story and began the series of plagiarism claims.
However, in a 45-page decision, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer ruled that there was no evidence of plagiarism by Warner Bros and Reeves, noting the lack of concrete evidence linking Wozniak’s story to The Batman.
The resolution of this lawsuit not only clarifies the legal situation surrounding The Batman but also highlights the complexity of creating stories within such a diverse and legally protected universe as DC Comics.
